Laser skin resurfacing is a treatment often used to reduce facial wrinkles and skin irregularities, such as blemishes or acne scars.

It does that by directing short, concentrated and pulsating beams of light at irregularities in the skin, removing that part of the skin layer by layer. This popular method is also called “laser peel”.

If you have a lot of fine lines, wrinkles or any skin irregularities on your face, around your eyes, mouth or on your forehead or you just feel conscious about your skin, then you may be a good fit for laser peeling.

If you have acne or if you have very dark skin, you may not be a candidate. This technique is also not recommended for stretch marks. You should discuss whether laser resurfacing is right for you by consulting with the doctor before having the procedure done.

So how does skin resurfacing work exactly?

There are two types of lasers that are most often used in laser peeling procedures.

Those are carbon dioxide (CO2) and Erbium laser resurfacing. Each of those types removes skin cells that are damaged at the surface level.

CO2 Laser Resurfacing

This procedure has been used for years to treat different skin issues, including wrinkles, scars, warts, enlarged oil glands on the nose, and other conditions.

The most modern type of CO2 laser resurfacing uses very short pulsed light energy (also called ultrapulse) that are done in a scanning pattern to remove very thin layers of skin with minimal damage. The recovery after this procedure usually takes up to two weeks.

Erbium Laser Resurfacing

The erbium laser skin resurfacing procedure is made in such way to remove surface level and moderately deep lines or wrinkles on the hands, neck, chest and of course the face. One of the good things about the erbium laser procedure is that it has minimal burning of the surrounding tissue. It also causes fewer side effects like swelling, bruising or redness. That way your recovery time will be faster than with CO2 resurfacing.
Some people only recover for a week but you should ask your doctor about how long recovery may take for you.

How does Excel V+ work?

The ultimate goal of laser treatment is to induce controlled damage to the affected blood vessels through destruction of hemoglobin (a protein found in red blood cells) while minimizing injury to adjacent structures. To accomplish this, the Excel V+ utilizes a long-pulsed Nd: YAG laser that targets and destroys the abnormal or damaged blood vessels responsible for the vascular condition. In fact, the Excel V+ is the only tunable laser system on the market that combines two ultra-precise wavelengths (532 nm and 1064 nm) in one device. After the body naturally eliminates these cells, the skin will return to its normal tone and texture.

Excel V+ is the most advanced aesthetic technology that combines two powerfully precise lasers to target and eliminate vascular concerns (redness, unsightly veins) and benign pigmented lesions (age spots, sun spots, discoloration) on the face and body.

The two interchangeable handpieces give this device the flexibility to treat a wide range of conditions, from superficial and deep vascular conditions to benign pigmented lesions. The CoolView (532 nm/1064 nm) handpiece with sapphire cooling window is indicated for treatment of benign vascular, cutaneous, and pigmented lesions.

The genesis V (1064 nm) non-ablative skin therapy handpiece is indicated for treatment of wrinkles, rosacea/diffuse redness, and scar reduction. Plus, the laser has an adjustable spot size, which makes it possible to treat both deep and superficial lesions. Dr. Krant will be able to easily custom-tailor each treatment session to fit your unique needs and goals.

The number of Excel V+ treatments needed will depend on various factors, including the size, thickness, and color of your vascular lesion. Superficial vascular lesions are typically easiest to treat and some patients may even notice significant improvement after just one treatment. However, on average it takes 2 to 3 treatments spaced 2 to 4 weeks apart to achieve the desired result.

Your treatment provider will select one of Excel V+’s two lasers and customize the treatment settings to target the color and depth of your skin concern. Most treatments are finished in just a few minutes.

For most procedures, Excel V+ provides quick treatments with best results within just a few days. Most procedures only take 5 to 10 minutes but some may take up to 45 minutes.

Excel V+ treatments can feel similar to a rubber band snapping against skin. Depending on the procedure, a cooled treatment tip will be in contact with the skin to protect and provide comfort to the area. A topical anesthetic may be available from your provider to improve your treatment experience.

Redness and/or swelling can be expected following treatment and will resolve within a few days. Treated brown spots will darken and slough off within 3 to 6 days. For full face treatments, swelling will peak 24 to 48 hours post treatment and usually resolves within a few days. Typically, you can wear make-up and return to normal activities immediately. Your provider may recommend a topical steroid to reduce swelling as needed.
